Acclaimed music video director Rhythm Sanadhya has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including singers like Shahid Mallya, Jubin Nautiyal, and Asees Kaur. Known for her visually compelling storytelling and emotionally rich narratives, Rhythm recently directed Ishq Zalim Hai, featuring actress Aditi Sharma and singer-actor Hamd Khan. Reflecting on the experience, the filmmaker shared that Aditi’s emotional intelligence and dedication played a crucial role in bringing the story to life.
Speaking about casting Aditi Sharma in the project, Rhythm revealed that the decision was rooted in a deep understanding of the actress’s ability to connect with complex emotions. According to her, Aditi possessed exactly the qualities she was looking for in the female protagonist of the song.
“Aditi is a very gentle yet strong person, and I could see the essence of my character reflected in her. The girl in the video is loving, caring, and compassionate, but she eventually faces betrayal and heartbreak. She carries that pain within herself and chooses dignity over revenge. The audience gets to witness both sides of her personality—the soft, nurturing side as well as the intense and emotionally wounded side,” Rhythm explained.
The director revealed that her admiration for Aditi as an artist began long before Ishq Zalim Hai was conceptualized. Through their interactions and conversations, she discovered an emotional depth that she felt would translate beautifully on screen.
“Aditi is an intelligent artist who deeply understands emotions. We became good friends over time, and during our conversations, I noticed the incredible emotional depth she carries within herself. She not only understands feelings but also knows how to express them beautifully. I always knew I wanted to cast her in an emotionally driven project. I was simply waiting for the right opportunity, and Ishq Zalim Hai turned out to be that perfect project,” she shared.
Despite the emotionally intense subject matter of the song, Rhythm described the atmosphere on set as warm, relaxed, and filled with positivity.
“Even though we were working on a heartbreaking story, the environment on set was extremely cheerful. There was a lot of laughter and positive energy throughout the shoot. Both Aditi Sharma and Hamd Khan were incredibly easy to work with, which made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone involved,” she said.
One of the most memorable moments from the shoot came during the filming of the song’s climactic sequence. Rhythm recalled how Aditi completely immersed herself in the emotionally charged scene and delivered a performance that exceeded expectations.
“In the final sequence, where the character is going through an extremely painful moment, Aditi completely outdid herself. She poured every emotion into the performance with such honesty and intensity that the entire crew found themselves reacting to her energy. It felt incredibly real,” Rhythm revealed.
What made the performance even more remarkable was the fact that Aditi was reportedly unwell on the day of filming. Despite her condition, she remained fully committed to the scene and delivered one of the strongest performances of the project.
“I remember being genuinely worried because Aditi wasn’t feeling well that day. The scene required intense crying, emotional breakdowns, and physically demanding moments. It needed tremendous emotional strength. But when the cameras rolled, she performed brilliantly. Nobody on set could even tell that she was unwell. Her dedication and professionalism were truly admirable,” Rhythm said.
For the filmmaker, the success of Ishq Zalim Hai came from the trust and understanding shared between the director and the performers. She emphasized that emotional storytelling requires collaboration beyond technical execution.
“To create a song like this, it’s important for the director and actor to share a strong emotional understanding. Aditi and I spent a lot of time discussing the characters, the emotions, and the journey portrayed in the song. We carefully explored the lyrics and music to understand the soul of the story. That honesty and collaboration helped us create Ishq Zalim Hai the way audiences see it today,” Rhythm concluded.
