Kolkata – On 26 February 2026, West Bengal’s healthcare landscape gained a significant landmark with the inauguration of Charnock Lohia Hospital, billed as the state’s first private heritage super speciality hospital. Housed in a meticulously restored nearly 200-year-old Grade I heritage building on Rabindra Sarani in central Kolkata, the 250-bed facility marries preserved architectural legacy with contemporary tertiary medical care.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by a high-profile delegation including Kolkata Mayor Firhad Bobby Hakim, State Ministers Shashi Panja (Industry, Commerce & Enterprise, Women & Child Development, Social Welfare) and Chandrima Bhattacharya (Finance, Health & Family Welfare, among others), Minister of State for Fire Sujit Bose, MP Dola Sen, MLAs Vivek Gupta and Deboprasad Bag, several councillors, former legislators, and social workers. Prashant Sharma, Managing Director of Charnock Hospital, led the hospital’s delegation during the event.

Spanning nearly 4 bighas, the property—formerly Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan—has been transformed through a Rs 250 crore+ investment into a fully modernised super speciality hospital while preserving its neoclassical façade and structural integrity. The adaptive reuse project stands as a rare example in India of harmonising heritage conservation with high-end healthcare delivery. Once a palatial residence during Bengal’s colonial era and later a charitable mother-and-child facility, the building now houses advanced medical infrastructure compliant with NABH standards.

Strategically positioned within 500 metres of Girish Park Metro Station, the hospital offers excellent connectivity to bustling commercial zones such as Burrabazar, Jorasanko, Nimtala Ghat Street, and Vivekananda Road. Multiple entry points and generous parking facilities further enhance accessibility for residents and businesses in densely populated central Kolkata.

The 250-bed facility includes over 90 general ward beds, 20 private cabins, and 70–80 ICU beds spread across various critical care specialities. It features 4–6 modular operation theatres, a dedicated Cath Lab, specialised CTVS and Neuro OTs, a 10-bed emergency department, a 10-bed dialysis unit, and comprehensive diagnostic and imaging services—all under one roof to ensure seamless, technology-supported tertiary care.

Addressing the media after the inauguration, Prashant Sharma, MD of Charnock Hospital, highlighted the project’s dual significance: “Across Bengal, several historic properties with immense potential remain underutilised. Through Charnock Lohia Hospital, we have demonstrated that heritage conservation and modern healthcare can coexist seamlessly. Central Kolkata, particularly Burrabazar and its surrounding areas, has long been a vibrant commercial hub but lacked access to a modern private super speciality hospital within a five-kilometre radius. With the launch of Charnock Lohia Hospital, we are addressing this critical gap. Timely access to advanced care can be life-saving, and our vision is to bring world-class healthcare closer to where people live and work—true to our philosophy of Patient First.”

The hospital is projected to generate direct and indirect employment for nearly 1,000 people, delivering a substantial economic boost to the local area. By retaining the building’s grand exterior while equipping the interior with state-of-the-art medical technology, Charnock Lohia Hospital achieves a rare balance: honouring Kolkata’s architectural and emotional heritage while meeting the urgent demand for high-quality tertiary services in North and Central Kolkata.

As Bengal’s healthcare sector continues to expand, the opening of Charnock Lohia Hospital sets a precedent for thoughtful redevelopment of heritage structures. It not only fills a longstanding gap in advanced private care for a densely populated region but also demonstrates how cultural preservation and public welfare can reinforce each other in meaningful, sustainable ways.
