Television Is a Powerful Medium for Social Change, Says Rajan Shahi

Mumbai: Renowned television producer Rajan Shahi, known for creating some of Indian television’s most successful and impactful shows, believes that the medium's responsibility extends far beyond entertainment. Through the recent stalking awareness storyline in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Shahi and his team at Director’s Kut Productions (DKP) have once again demonstrated how television can be used to address important social issues and encourage meaningful conversations among viewers.

Over the years, Rajan Shahi has produced several acclaimed shows including Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Anupamaa, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Havan, Amrit Manthan, and Woh Toh Hai Albelaa. While entertainment remains the primary objective, he strongly believes that television possesses the unique ability to influence attitudes, spark discussions, and promote awareness on issues affecting society.

According to Shahi, television characters often become an integral part of viewers' lives. Audiences develop emotional connections with characters and families they follow regularly, making television a powerful platform for communicating important messages.

“Characters like Armaan, Abhira, and Anupamaa become part of millions of households. Viewers connect deeply with them, and their actions and perspectives often leave a lasting impression. This influence can be used positively to address social concerns and encourage awareness,” he shared.

The current storyline in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai focuses on stalking, an issue that affects countless young girls and families across the world. The narrative highlights the emotional impact of harassment and the importance of recognizing, addressing, and reporting such incidents.

Shahi explained that the track was developed with a clear purpose: to create awareness around a problem that many individuals experience but often hesitate to discuss openly. Through the experiences of the show's characters, the storyline explores the fear, confusion, and trauma that can accompany such situations while emphasizing the importance of support from family members.

Taking the initiative beyond television screens, Director’s Kut Productions also created a special awareness video featuring characters Armaan, Abhira, Myra, and Mukti. The video brought together two generations to discuss child safety, support systems, and the steps families can take when faced with situations involving bullying, harassment, or stalking.

The awareness campaign also encouraged children and families to speak openly about uncomfortable experiences and seek help when necessary. Importantly, the initiative included helpline information, reinforcing the message that no one should feel afraid or ashamed to report incidents of harassment or intimidation.

On a storytelling level, the track also contributed to the emotional growth of Armaan and Abhira as parents. The narrative presents a relatable reality faced by many families—the realization that children grow up and may encounter challenges such as bullying, harassment, and unwanted attention. Their journey reflects the concerns, responsibilities, and emotional decisions that parents often navigate in real life.

The response to the storyline has been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers appreciating the show's effort to address a socially relevant topic while maintaining emotional authenticity. For Shahi, this reaction reaffirms the importance of creating content that resonates beyond entertainment.

Looking toward the future, the producer remains committed to incorporating meaningful themes into his storytelling. He believes creators have a responsibility to use their platforms wisely and contribute positively to society.

As television continues to reach millions of households every day, Rajan Shahi hopes to keep addressing pressing social issues through compelling narratives that educate, inspire, and encourage dialogue. For him, television is not merely a source of entertainment—it is a powerful medium capable of creating awareness, fostering empathy, and driving positive change.
