Somy Ali Raises Awareness About Domestic Abuse and the Importance of Speaking Up

Former actress, humanitarian, and founder of No More Tears, Somy Ali continues her mission to support survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking through advocacy, intervention, and rehabilitation. Drawing from years of firsthand experience working with victims, Somy has shed light on the complex realities of abuse and the challenges survivors face while seeking safety and justice.

Speaking about the cases that frequently come to her organization, Somy explained that domestic abuse often extends far beyond physical violence. According to her, many survivors endure a combination of physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse that systematically strips away their independence and self-worth.

“Abuse is not always visible. While physical violence leaves scars that can be seen, emotional and psychological abuse can be equally devastating. Many women are subjected to constant control, intimidation, humiliation, and manipulation that gradually erode their confidence and ability to seek help,” she said.

Somy emphasized that one of the most common misconceptions surrounding abusive relationships is the assumption that victims can simply leave whenever they choose. She explained that the reality is often far more complicated.

Many survivors face threats against their lives, concerns about their children’s safety, financial dependence, and a lack of access to secure housing or support networks. In some cases, years of manipulation and emotional abuse leave victims feeling isolated and convinced that they have nowhere to turn.

“Fear and hopelessness become powerful barriers. Many survivors have spent years being told they are worthless, that no one will believe them, or that they will face severe consequences if they try to leave. These fears can make escape feel impossible,” Somy shared.

Highlighting the lasting effects of emotional abuse, she noted that psychological trauma often remains long after physical injuries have healed. Constant criticism, gaslighting, threats, and emotional manipulation can profoundly affect a survivor’s self-esteem, mental health, and ability to trust others.

According to Somy, recognizing early warning signs can play a crucial role in protecting those at risk. She encouraged families, friends, and communities to remain attentive to behavioral changes that may indicate abuse.

Warning signs may include social isolation, unexplained injuries, visible fear around a partner, sudden personality changes, withdrawal from loved ones, or repeated attempts to justify suspicious incidents. Somy stressed that these indicators should never be ignored.

Discussing the impact of technology on modern abuse cases, Somy noted that digital tools have created new methods for abusers to maintain control over victims. Tracking devices, surveillance applications, hidden cameras, and online harassment have become increasingly common in abusive relationships.

At the same time, technology has also become a valuable resource for survivors seeking help. Organizations like No More Tears utilize digital communication tools and modern technologies to connect with individuals who may be unable to seek assistance openly.

Sharing a story of hope and resilience, Somy recalled helping a survivor who had endured years of emotional manipulation and financial control. After escaping a dangerous situation with her children, the woman received legal assistance, protective services, and safe housing through the organization.

Today, she has rebuilt her life, secured employment, and created a safer future for her family. While recovery remains an ongoing journey, her story serves as a powerful reminder that healing is possible when survivors receive the support they need.

Concluding her message, Somy urged anyone experiencing abuse—or anyone who suspects someone may be in danger—to seek help without delay. She emphasized that community awareness and timely intervention can save lives.

“Silence protects abusers. Speaking up, offering support, and connecting survivors with resources can make all the difference. No one should have to face abuse alone,” she said.

Through her continued advocacy and humanitarian efforts, Somy Ali remains committed to empowering survivors, raising awareness about domestic violence, and creating pathways toward safety, recovery, and hope.
