Sheena Chohan Revives Raja Ravi Varma’s Heroines
Sheena Chohan reimagines Raja Ravi Varma’s iconic women in a cinematic four-image tribute.
Internationally acclaimed Pan-India actress Sheena Chohan has unveiled a striking four-image photographic series inspired by the iconic female figures of legendary Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. Conceived as a visual tribute to the artist’s enduring legacy, the project reimagines his timeless heroines through a contemporary lens while preserving the emotional richness and grace that made them culturally significant.
Celebrated for his portrayal of Indian womanhood with dignity, poise, and emotional depth, Raja Ravi Varma created female characters who have remained deeply embedded in the country’s artistic and cultural memory. In this newly unveiled series, Sheena Chohan goes beyond visual recreation to offer a performance-led interpretation of these celebrated muses. Rather than simply posing as historical figures, she inhabits them with a cinematic intensity that gives each frame a sense of inner life and narrative movement.
The series unfolds as a visual story, with each image capturing a distinct emotional register associated with Ravi Varma’s artistic world. In one frame, Chohan portrays Damayanti, evoking a quiet moment of destiny as she shares an intimate exchange with the swan. The performance is marked by a balance of vulnerability, curiosity, and inner strength, creating a portrait that feels both classical and immediate.
Another image draws viewers into a moonlit atmosphere of stillness and contemplation. Here, Chohan embodies introspection with remarkable restraint, allowing the silence of the frame to carry emotional power. In a separate portrait, she appears as a princess with fruits, radiating grace, abundance, and warmth. The image reflects not only elegance but also a subtle resilience that connects the classical subject to modern emotional sensibilities.
The final frame presents the essence of the classical Indian heroine—poised, dignified, and deeply self-aware. Together, the four portraits form a cohesive tribute to the timeless spirit of Indian femininity, interpreted through a modern cinematic sensibility. Every image in the series has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail, from costume design and jewellery to posture, lighting, and visual composition. This careful execution helps bridge the worlds of classical painting and contemporary visual storytelling.
Speaking about the project, Sheena Chohan said that recreating Raja Ravi Varma’s women was an inspiring experience because of the emotional complexity with which the painter approached them. She noted that what drew her most strongly to the project was his portrayal of women not merely as beautiful figures, but as layered individuals with agency, emotion, and strength. As an actor, she said, she feels deeply connected to such roles and viewed the series as a way of honouring these women while making them feel alive and relevant for today’s audience.
Shot at Evolve Back Hampi, the photographic series also serves as a tribute to India’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. The location adds visual authenticity and grandeur to the project, enhancing its connection to the classical Indian aesthetic while allowing it to speak in a modern visual language.
On the professional front, Sheena Chohan continues to expand her presence across multiple film industries. Following her acclaimed performance in Sant Tukaram, she is set to appear alongside JD Chakravarthy in Jatasya Maranam Dhruvam. She will also be seen in Arjunanin Allirani, written by B. Jeyamohan with music by Ilaiyaraaja, as well as in her Hollywood feature Nomad.
With this project, Sheena Chohan not only revisits India’s artistic history but also reanimates it through performance, proving that timeless characters can continue to resonate when approached with depth, conviction, and emotional truth.
