From $34 to AI Visionary: Shekhar Natarajan’s Story

Hyderabad — In a modest courtyard inside one of Hyderabad’s underserved settlements, a group of children in plaid school uniforms gathers around a tall man dressed in a simple white kurta. Their curiosity is unmistakable as they crowd closer, some reaching out to touch his sleeve.

The man they surround is Shekhar Natarajan, an artificial intelligence innovator who holds more than seventy patents and once helped transform a $30 million grocery operation into a $5 billion business at Walmart. In a few weeks, he is expected to address global leaders at the World Economic Forum on the future of artificial intelligence.

Yet standing among the children, he appears less like a technology executive and more like someone who grew up somewhere very similar to this neighborhood.

In many ways, he did.

The Investment That Changed Everything

For Natarajan, the foundation of his journey began with a sacrifice that rarely appears in economic textbooks.

When his family struggled to afford school fees, his mother pawned her wedding ring for thirty rupees so that he could continue his education. The amount may seem insignificant today, but at that moment it represented everything the family had.

Money, however, was only part of the story.

For nearly a year, his mother stood outside a headmaster’s office each day, determined to secure her son’s chance at education.

“She didn’t have influence or connections,” Natarajan recalls. “She simply decided she would stand there until something changed.”

The experience left a deep impression on him. What many would describe simply as love, he now interprets through the lens of systems and design.

“That kind of love is not just emotion,” he says. “It’s a kind of technology — something capable of producing real outcomes.”

A Journey Across Continents

Years later, Natarajan arrived in the United States with just $34 in his pocket.

From those modest beginnings, he built an impressive career that took him through leading institutions such as Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard Business School and IESE Business School.

His professional journey included innovation and strategy roles across global companies, where he helped develop new systems and technologies in sectors ranging from logistics to digital transformation. Over time, he accumulated more than seventy patents and became recognized for his work in artificial intelligence and business innovation.

But Natarajan believes the most important question is not how technology performs — but whom it serves.

“Many systems optimize for efficiency, speed and scale,” he explains. “But they rarely optimize for dignity or human well-being.”

Rethinking Artificial Intelligence

Natarajan argues that the biggest challenge in artificial intelligence today is not technical but philosophical.

Most AI systems, he says, treat ethics as an afterthought. Engineers build systems first and later add safeguards or filters designed to prevent harmful outcomes.

“That approach puts morality on the outside of the system,” he explains. “It becomes a guardrail rather than the foundation.”

Inspired by the lessons of his mother’s perseverance, Natarajan has proposed a different model — one he calls Angelic Intelligence.

The concept centers on virtue-native AI, where ethical reasoning is embedded directly within the architecture of the system rather than applied later as a control mechanism.

The framework, known as the 27 Digital Angels, draws on philosophical traditions from across the world — including Confucian ethics, the African philosophy of Ubuntu and the Indian concept of dharma.

In his vision, these values form the core logic guiding AI decision-making.

Back in the Courtyard

During his visit to the Hyderabad school, a young girl approaches Natarajan and comments on the dust covering his shoes after walking through the settlement’s unpaved streets.

He laughs and kneels down to speak with her.

Moments like this, he says, are reminders of why technology must remain connected to real lives.

“Children here notice everything,” he says. “The real question is whether the systems we build will learn to notice them too.”

Thinking in Centuries

Away from the boardrooms and technology conferences, Natarajan follows an unusual routine. Every morning at 4 a.m., he paints traditional Indian artwork — a practice he considers a discipline of patience and focus.

“Painting teaches you that meaningful work takes time,” he says. “Wisdom accumulates slowly.”

As he prepares to speak at global forums including the World Economic Forum and other international policy gatherings, his message remains consistent.

Artificial intelligence, he believes, will shape decisions about opportunity, access and visibility for generations.

“The Indian intellectual tradition often thinks in cycles of thousands of years,” he says. “Technology companies sometimes think in product cycles of eighteen months. The real challenge lies somewhere between those two perspectives.”

Sending It Forward

Before leaving the school courtyard, Natarajan pauses at the gate and looks back.

“My parents sent something into the world,” he says quietly. “My mother’s sacrifice and my father’s generosity created opportunities that eventually returned to me.”

Now, he believes it is his responsibility to send those opportunities forward again.

For Natarajan, the goal of Angelic Intelligence is simple but profound: building technology that recognizes the potential of people who might otherwise remain unseen.

“The ring my mother pawned,” he says, “I’m trying to give it back — a million times over.”
