Sony LIV Secures Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Streaming Premiere

Mumbai, March 2026 – Sony LIV has acquired the digital streaming rights to Aamir Khan’s heartwarming basketball-themed comedy-drama Sitaare Zameen Par, marking the platform’s first-ever premiere of a Hindi theatrical film. The announcement comes nearly a year after the movie’s theatrical release in June 2025, during which it emerged as the sixth highest-grossing Hindi-language film of the year at the Indian box office. Prior to this deal, the film was made available for paid viewing on YouTube’s on-demand service.

Directed by R. S. Prasanna—known for his earlier works Kalyana Samayal Saadham and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan—Sitaare Zameen Par presents an uplifting narrative centered on personal growth, empathy, and second chances. Aamir Khan plays Gulshan Arora, a seasoned basketball coach whose life changes course following a drunk-driving incident. As part of his court-mandated community service, Gulshan is tasked with coaching a team of neurodivergent players preparing for a competitive tournament. What begins as an unwelcome obligation gradually evolves into a transformative experience for both coach and team, blending humor, emotion, and social awareness.

The ensemble cast features Genelia Deshmukh alongside a group of young performers portraying the neurodivergent athletes: Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai, and Naman Misra. Produced under the Aamir Khan Productions banner by Khan himself alongside Aparna Purohit, with B. Shrinivas Rao and Ravi Bhagchandka serving as producers, the film was written by Divy Nidhi Sharma.

Aamir Khan, one of Bollywood’s most respected and commercially successful actors, has built a legacy through iconic performances in films such as 3 Idiots, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, and Peepli Live. Over the past decade, he has increasingly shifted focus toward meaningful storytelling as a producer, backing projects like Laapataa Ladies and now Sitaare Zameen Par. His upcoming slate includes the period drama Lahore 1947, an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.

For Sony LIV—an India-centric streaming service available in over 40 territories—this acquisition represents a notable strategic move. By securing the post-theatrical digital premiere of a major Hindi theatrical release, the platform signals its intent to strengthen its Hindi film library and attract audiences seeking quality content beyond original series and licensed international titles. Until now, Sony LIV has primarily focused on originals, live sports, and select acquired movies; premiering a recent Aamir Khan-led theatrical feature marks a clear step change in its content approach.

The film’s subject matter—centered on neurodiversity, redemption, and the unifying power of sport—resonates with contemporary audience interest in inclusive and feel-good stories. Its strong theatrical performance in 2025 demonstrated commercial viability, while the narrative’s emphasis on empathy and teamwork aligns well with current streaming preferences for emotionally engaging, family-friendly content.

Industry observers view the deal as mutually beneficial. For Sony LIV, landing a high-profile title starring one of Bollywood’s biggest names helps bolster subscriber acquisition and retention in a competitive OTT market. For the filmmakers and producers, the streaming window extends the film’s reach to audiences who may have missed it during its theatrical run or prefer home viewing.

As Sitaare Zameen Par prepares to debut on Sony LIV, it carries forward Aamir Khan’s tradition of choosing projects that entertain while quietly addressing social themes. The streaming premiere is expected to introduce the story to a wider, global Indian diaspora audience, further amplifying its message of patience, understanding, and the unexpected ways people can change one another for the better.
