Vishaal Mohan Practices Every Scene Before Camera, Focuses on Versatility
Actor Vishaal Mohan, who began as assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, opens up about rigorous scene practice, audience power, and his commitment to diverse roles and meaningful storytelling in cinema.
Mumbai: Actor Vishaal Mohan is quietly building a reputation for thoughtful performances and a disciplined approach to his craft. Having started his journey behind the camera as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish and later on Aisha, Vishaal brings a filmmaker’s sensibility to his acting work, which has helped him deliver consistently layered portrayals across diverse projects.
After making his acting debut in Game 100 Crore Ka, Vishaal has deliberately chosen varied characters — from the sincere young man in Yadav Ji Ki Love Story to a government officer in Aashiqui Imtehaan Leti Hai, and a markedly different role in Mehndi 2. This conscious effort to avoid repetition reflects his desire to explore different shades of human experience on screen.
In a candid conversation, Vishaal acknowledged the sharp evolution in audience awareness. “Viewers are very smart these days,” he observed. “Our education system and access to information have changed a lot. Today audiences understand filmmaking and can clearly identify who is a good actor, director, or producer.” He noted that even star kids face scrutiny if they fail to deliver on their artistic responsibilities.
The actor emphasised that real power now rests firmly with the audience. “Today’s young actors, especially those coming from small towns, are well prepared. Ultimately, everything is in the hands of the audience. They have the power to give fame and also take it away,” he said.
Vishaal also spoke warmly about the influence of streaming platforms, which he credits with expanding both content variety and learning opportunities for actors. “With so many OTT platforms today, content is available everywhere. I personally enjoy watching content on these platforms and observing how actors portray their characters. I try to learn something new every day,” he shared.
Currently, the actor is excited about a new comedy project with a first-time director whose fresh storytelling approach caught his attention. “I chose this project because the director’s observation and storytelling are quite different,” he revealed. “If you notice my films, I have played very different roles in each one. I believe actors should explore different sides of their personality and also convey meaningful messages to society.”
Despite receiving mixed feedback for Yadav Ji Ki Love Story, Vishaal drew satisfaction from the appreciation his performance received. He attributes the authenticity in his work to a rigorous personal process. “Before doing any scene, I practice a lot,” he disclosed. “After giving a take, I watch myself on the monitor and analyze if anything can be improved so that I don’t go out of character.”
This habit of self-review, combined with thorough research and homework before every shoot, helps him stay immersed in the role. Vishaal also makes a conscious effort to preserve cultural values and traditions in his characters whenever possible.
He admitted that the positive audience response to his work has come as a pleasant surprise and has significantly raised his sense of responsibility. “When I started, I wasn’t sure whether people would like my acting. But now that audiences are appreciating my roles, the sense of responsibility has increased. It motivates me to work even harder,” he said.
As the film industry continues to transform with abundant content and more discerning viewers, Vishaal Mohan represents a new generation of actors who combine old-school discipline with modern adaptability. From assisting one of Indian cinema’s most visionary directors to carving his own path with sincerity and versatility, his journey reflects quiet determination and respect for the craft.
Whether in intense dramatic roles or upcoming lighter fare, Vishaal’s commitment to preparation and authenticity suggests he is an actor who values substance over shortcuts — a quality that continues to earn him growing appreciation from audiences who value genuine performances.
